Online Culinary Degree
An online culinary degree can prepare you for an exciting career in the food service industry and open up access to many positions in this highly competitive field. With an online culinary degree you will qualify for a career as an executive chef, sous chef, restaurant manager, pastry chef, baker, food and beverage director and more.
Depending upon the school, you can expect to encounter some core curriculum classes in math, science, and writing, and perhaps even some basic business classes, particularly if you decide to pursue a career in restaurant management. As you progress through your degree program, you'll encounter a curriculum that includes subjects such as baking, pastries and desserts, sauce and soup making, meats, sanitation, menu creation, nutrition, and many more.
Online Degree Choices
Online degree offerings include associates, bachelors, and certificate degree programs. While an associates degree will typically allow you to seek jobs as a cook or even assistant or sous chef at some restaurants, if you plan on becoming a full-fledged executive or pastry chef, or even own and manage your own restaurant, a four-year degree is preferred. Of course, if you need to specialize in a certain area, there are also certificate programs from which to choose.
Career and Salary Outlook
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects demand for chefs, cooks, and other food service industry jobs to grow at a rate of 11-percent through 2016 or about the average for all US occupations. All-in-all the opportunities presented to fresh culinary graduates are many and varied, particularly if one is willing to travel abroad or work on a cruise ship. Furthermore, opportunities exist at stadiums and arenas as well as convention centers, hotels, and more.
If you intend to pursue a full-time career in the culinary arts, you should know that the more education and experience you have, the more you are assured of making. Most bakers, pastry chefs, and cook just starting out can expect to earn little more than $20,000 annually. Most chefs and head cooks, however, do better at over $40,000.
More significant money is typically earned by those with greater experience and management positions. For example, the average restaurant manager can make about $44,000 to upwards of $60,000 per year.
